... and I’m not afraid to show it. In fact, I’m making a whole short film about it. My name is Mike Heff, I’m the writer/director of “Punk Kids”. I’ve spent most of my life playing drums in a band with my best friends. Now I’ve found myself on a new journey, one involving a tiny rabbit. I met Kealani and the Tiny Rabbit Productions crew at Andy’s music video shoot for “1985”. I volunteered to be an extra so I could meet people in the Bay Area film community. Andy was also a musician who I knew through the local music scene. I had been admiring his skills as a cinematographer for a while and was aiming to work with him. This was 2018, the year I finished writing my first screenplay. I was moving in a new direction creatively, one that ignited my heart like nothing had before. My goal was to become a writer/director, and I was positioning myself to achieve it.
The script for Punk kids was inspired by a local punk show I attended after getting home from Sundance Film Festival with the Tiny Rabbit crew. What an experience Sundance was! When I got home I was like a cannon ball of creativity ready to fire. Back at the show, the opening band was playing. The floor was pretty empty, only a few of their friends had a mosh pit going in front of the stage. To me, someone who’d been playing in a band for years, this was a shitty show. But then I noticed the look on their faces. The band was so happy to be up there, and their friends were having a blast moshing, even though there was only three of them in the pit. It reminded me of what it was like when my band first started. How much fun we had just playing music, regardless of where, or to who, or for how much. I knew I wanted to write a script about being in band, but now I knew what it would look like. I started the outline for “Punk Kids” that night.
